Commercial Aggregates Edmonton

Aggregates are essential components used to manufacture concrete and mortar like gravel and sand. Commercial aggregates in Edmonton give body resistance and stability to mortar and concrete. At Stony Valley Contracting, we’re top-rated suppliers of aggregate that provide a consistent supply of materials for any size of construction project. As the best aggregate company, you can rest assured we’ll offer timely services to ensure your project stays on track.

Classification of Aggregates

Aggregates are classified depending on different factors. They include:

Classification Of Aggregates As Per Size

Aggregates come in different sizes. The size used by top cement companies will be based on a number of factors such as type of project and mix proportions. Aggregates are classified into 3 types according to size:

Fine Aggregate

When the aggregate passes through a 4.75mm sieve during sieve analysis, it’s referred to fine aggregate. Natural sand, clay, and silt are considered fine aggregate. This type of aggregate is used as a workability agent and to fill the voids in coarse aggregate.

Coarse Aggregate

Aggregate retained through a 4.75mm sieve is known as coarse aggregate. Boulders, gravel, and cobble all fall under this category.

All-In-One Aggregate

An aggregate supply company can also have all-in-one aggregate. A combination of coarse and fine aggregate is called all-in-one aggregate.

Classification Of Aggregates As Per Shape

Aggregate comes from naturally occurring rocks. For this reason, it’s hard to achieve the desired shape of aggregate. The shape of aggregate determines the workability of mortar and concrete. Classification based on shape includes:

Round Aggregates

These are smooth, natural aggregates with rounded particles. The shape is a result of weathering action like attrition and erosion. Examples of round aggregates are river gravel, windblown sand, seashore gravel, and seashore sand.

Irregular Aggregates

These are partly rounded aggregates and are shaped through attrition. Compared to rounded aggregates, irregular aggregates have reduced workability. They have voids of approximately 36 percent, meaning they need more cement paste, unlike rounded aggregate. Examples of these types of aggregate are gravel, pit sand, and cuboid rocks.

Angular Aggregates

They're obtained by crushing stone and rock and are ideal for high-strength concrete. The void percentage of angular aggregate is about 40 percent, meaning it requires more cement paste.

Classification Of Aggregates As Per Source

Aggregate can also be classified according to nature of formation or source as below:

Natural Aggregate

Natural occurring aggregates are inert granular materials like crushed stone, sand, and gravel stone. These aggregates can be found in bed rocks, river basins, and slope deposits. Concrete and cement companies combine natural aggregate with a binding medium like cement, bitumen, lime, or water to form different compounds such as cement concrete or asphalt concrete.

Artificial Aggregate

These aggregates are made from various by-products like rice husk, fly ash, power plant solid waste, over burnt brickbats, and granite powder.
