Stony Valley Contracting is a gravel company with its head office in Fort McMurray. It is owned and operated by Dan Fouts and Wayne Woodhouse who have over fifty years combined experience in the aggregate and light civil contracting business. Half of this work experience has been gained working directly in the Fort McMurray area supplying aggregate and construction services to the Oil Sands Companies and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Our experience has been multi-faceted from managing the supply and production of aggregate to light civil earth projects. We have worked on all the Oilsands sites and numerous other areas in the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Some of the services we have managed for Oilsands Companies are:
- aggregate exploration
- approvals and permit applications
- pit development engineering and design including final reclamation
- pit management
- aggregate processing of numerous products to engineering specifications from road base materials to concrete products
- delivery of processed materials to site
- light civil work, hydraulic excavators, rock trucks and dozers
- crushing and washing of filter products, rip rap and gabian for the Old Man River Dam at Pincher Creek, Alberta, processing and delivery of various granular road base and backfill material for the Obed Mine at Hinton, Alberta
- as well as the management, processing and commercial re-sale of products from TransAlta’s mine at Wabamun, Alberta.
We have managed projects ranging from $50,000 to $25 million. Currently Stony Valley Contracting is under contract to Suncor, Shell Jackpine and Nexen Long Lake providing processing as well as supply services in the amount of $8,000,000; $7,420,000 and $12,000,000 respectively. (see Work history)
Our experiences have not been limited to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. We have been involved in many other projects in Alberta and Saskatchewan including, but not limited to:
- crushing of CN track ballast in Saskatchewan,
- processing and delivery of many products from filter materials to concrete aggregate for the Sheerness Generating plant at Hanna, Alberta

Although Stony Valley Contracting is a relatively new company, the owners bring a strong safety history to the business. It is our objective to exercise the same ‘hands-on’ approach to safety with our employees and clients as we do with our business. We will instill our safety philosophy and grow our safety program to ensure our employees, as well as the people we work with, return home safely. Safety is a continuum that we believe must become a part of our every day culture in order to be effective. It is our responsibility and duty, as owners, to lead this approach by example and we will embrace this concept top down as well as bottom up.
Stony Valley Contracting is committed to the Oilsands Companies and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and offers the following services:
- Aggregate Development - We have the expertise and experience to provide the many facets of aggregate development from exploration, permitting and approvals at all levels of Government, pit development and design including reclamation as well as pit management.
- Aggregate Processing - We are in a position to process a wide range of aggregate products from road base materials to concrete and filter gravel via mobile crushing and wash plants.
- Delivery - We employ a fleet of owner operator trucks with the ability to deliver the products to your destinations.
- Light Civil Work - We have the equipment and experience to perform many types of civil work such as; site preparation and road work, slashing, clearing and light earth moving involving hydraulic excavators, rock trucks and dozers.

We understand the need to not only provide employment opportunities to local people but also to local aboriginals and we are familiar with the native communities of Fort Chipewyan, Fort MacKay, Fort McMurray, Gregoire Lake and Janvier. It is our commitment to work with the owners and local communities to provide opportunities either directly through employment or indirectly via sub-contract.
